  • The slippery critter....Did he think he would fool me?

I've lost a rellie from my tree, someone i thought existed doesn't :(

Based on early census searches i thought i should have had an Alexander Hay and a William Hay in the same family, when i first found the census returns there wasn't anything on freebmd to help....

    1881

    Registration district: Flegg
    Sub registration district: East Flegg
    Household Members: Name Age
    Addie L. Hay
    Alexander Hay 1
    Alexander H. Hay 21
    Susan Hay 21
    Bertha Stone 14

    1891

    Alexander M Hay 31
    Anna Hay 10
    George F Hay 8
    Susan Hay 31
    William Hay 11

Seems the parents split after this census, they appear in two households in different counties from this point on. Following dad and William.......

    1901

    Registration district: Poplar
    Sub-registration district: Bow
    Household schedule number: 244

    Household Members: Name Age
    Elizabeth Emmerson 26
    Amelia Franklin 77
    Alexander Hay 41
    William Hay 21
    Henry Samuel Imse 27
    Elizabeth Keen 19
    Amelia L Morgan 53

    Marriages Sep 1903 (>99%)
    ----------------------------

    HAY Alexander Gravesend 2a 1276
MUNDAY Ethel Blanche Gravesend 2a 1276

I searched the 1911 looking for Alexander Hay with an Ethel in the house and found this result, i haven't looked at the transcript but i'm pretty confident it's one household.

HAY ALEC MUIR M 1860 51 West Ham Essex
HAY ALEXANDER MUIR M 1909 2 West Ham Essex
HAY ANNIE LOUISA F 1907 4 West Ham Essex
HAY CHARLES WILLIAM M 1903 8 West Ham Essex
HAY FREDERICK AARON M 1905 6 West Ham Essex
HAY WILLIAM ALEXANDER M 1880 31 West Ham Essex

And now i have found via freebmd a birth ref

    Birth reg;
    Births Sep 1879 (>99%)
    -----------------------
Hay William Alexander Flegg 4b 29

There are at least two trees on Ancestry with the oldest Alexander/Alec listed, i wonder if they have picked up on the name change for William Alexander and if the tree owners could be more rellies of mine too?

good bit of detective work there

I suspect you will have to see if there is a free trial to ancestry to be able to contact them?

I used a freebie a while ago Julie, Ancestry already have the card number and it won't accept it again :(

Alexander Muir Hay 1860 Northumberland and Alexander Muir Hay c1879 Norfolk seem to match a few trees.

Also William Alexander Hay 1879 Norfolk appears in a public tree.

I did look for a Frederick Aaron Hay born 1905 as listed in the 1911 but there doesn't appear to be one in a tree, shame really as it's probably unusual and far easier to spot than the usual Hay family names.

          Mmmm

Just re-registered with GR and there is a tree with Frederick Hay 1905, Biggleswade.

None of the siblings or a parent coming up for that same tree owner though. looks like someone picked him up as a side branch somewhere and didn't pursue things.

              HI Glen

the info on the 1911 is as follows

William Alexander Hay 31 bn Gt Yarmouth Occ Railway Porter
Ethel Amelia Hay 30 bn GT Yarmouth ( they've been married 9 years)
Alec Muir Hay 50 married bn GT Yarmouth Occ Contractors Foreman
Charles William Hay 8 bn St Lukes E C
Frederick Aaron 6 Hay bn (Arseley) Bedfordshire
Anne Louisa Hay 4 bn """
              Alexander Muir hay 2 """"

Just incase it helps I'm only going on someones else transcript for the above info so I'm not sure where in BED's the younger chldren were born

As you will see from the full name entry on Ethel Amelia Hay not having a middle name of Blanche as you first suspected in the first search for a marriage of William to an Ethel but I think that William actually married in Dec 1901 to Ethel Amelia Gibbs in Holborn.

                Thanks Wendy

I had missed the reply so your pm was handy.

I wonder why they suddenly start putting Yarmouth down as pob?

                Hendon would make more sense as the place of marriage thanks to the 1903 birth and the fact he was in Bow just prior to the marriage, (though Gravesend does figure in my Hay family at about the time, i probably looked for post 1901 marriages);

                Births Jun 1903
                ----------------------

HAY Charles William Holborn 1b 698

Interestingly one of the Ancestry trees shows Alexander Muir Hay b 1879 Runham , England - d 1953 Arlesey, England, quite what research and sources the tree owner has i'm not sure. I'm hoping they may get back to me but i fear it's a sidebranch or long lapsed Ancestry user knowing my luck.

                    Thankyou Wendy

It's strange seeing the name as William A Hay after all the chasing around, especially as he had an uncle with the same initials (different name and fortunately i have that chap fully sorted).

What an unfortunate transposition. The correct spelling is Arlesey.
