  • A ~Sweet~ Problem

On the 1911 census my granpop is listed with his Mum @ Dad

However the place of births is what is confusing me slighty.

SWEET, JOHN RICHARD JAMES HEAD MARRIED M 46 FARM LABOURER ST PETERS PART GWERNESS
SWEET, ALICE MAUD MARY WIFE MARRIED 13 F 36 ST SEA

    St Peters Part 'port'? Gwerness'guernsey'?

And St Sea , should that be At Sea inwhich case should it not say the nationality of the ship ?

      Hi Peter,
Looks like some words have been mistranscribed on the 1911. Have you looked at the image, or only the transcription?
Was just about to look for the family in 1901 but I see Elaine has beaten me to it.

Looking at marriages on FreeBMD, I found this one in 1903, so that would be after they already appear as husband and wife on the 1901 census. Could be just a coincidence, but the names and initials match up:

        Marriages Dec 1903
GASSON Albert Edward Maidstone 2a 1644
        IFIELD Alice Maud M Maidstone 2a 1644
Miles Lilian Emily Maidstone 2a 1644
        Sweet John Richard S Maidstone 2a 1644

That also throws up another porblems as he is James in 1911 but Samuel on the birth cert of John Henry . in 1902

As you have only seen the transcription, perhaps Samuel has been transcribed incorrectly as James?

                    Available on Ancestry.
A census is an official list of the people in a particular area at a given time, while voter lists show those who were registered to vote in a certain area. The valuable information found on census records helps you to understand your family in their time and place. Voter Lists serve as a confirmation of residence in between the years that the census was taken.

                    - scroll down and you can search the individual years for the Channel Islands.
