  • Can anybody read this crime, please?

Newly found on the Ancestry ciminals pages!
The entry if for Sophia Peer. Not a direct ancestor but in my tree (its a very rare name). I have her as unmarried with one illegitimate child born in 1866 (he's still alive in 1871!). I can't read all the words.

            I thought I could read

Not guilty of murder but guilty of [endevouring] by ----- [disposition] of the dead body of her child to conceal the birth thereof.

the words in brackets are questionable and I can't read the word after 'by' at all. Poor soul - it sounds as if her child was born dead and she tried to hide it.

                Hi
I agree with Anne for the words in brackets, the best I can do for the word after by is merit but it doesn't make sense.

I can't even SEE it, let alone read it, lol.

We ancient olde crones need larger writing.

I changed my screen zoom level to 400% and agree it says secret disposition. Couldn't work out endeavoring at all but can see it now Anne has suggested it.

There's several 'unlawfully endeavouring to conceal the birth' on the Old Bailey site.
                            Results - Central Criminal Court

                            And 'secret dispositions.
                            Results - Central Criminal Court

And this is worded slightly different.
Unlawfully endeavouring to conceal the birth of her child by a secret disposition of the body.

Thank you very much for those Phil. Poor woman.

Well, silly me, I should have Googled her name. There is a reference to the crime on the website Victorian Crime and Punishment. I will let them know the outcome - since she was found Not Guilty of murder at least. http://vcp.e2bn.org/prisoners/29762-1-sophia-peer.html
