I grew up in Manchester and we had a nearby park called Boggart Hole Clough, lol. I can well imagine it needed a series of boys in Victorian times, to do odd jobs around the place and irrigate the extensive and hilly areas.
That old dictionary is the best bargain I ever bought - sixpence (old money) for eight volumes at a jumble sale. Some of the articles are almost encyclopaedic, and others have little illustrations. Particularly good for Scottish and Northern English words, as well as obsolete terms.
Must say, I think clough seems more rural than Manchester - I was thinking fens !!!
