  • Boarder or lodger

I was looking at a census return and for the dwelling there was a family, 1 boarder and 2 lodgers. I'm curious what is the difference between a boarder and a lodger?

I think a boarder got his meals included with his room, whereas a lodger only got a room.

This is a guess: a lodger pays to rent the room and that's all; a boarder lives as part of the family and eats with them. But I could be completely wrong and I'm open to correction!

Okay that seems to make sense. Thanks to both of you.
