  • Please can anyone help read..

.. something on a millitary page on ancestry?
If you search George Herbert Bachelor, b.1874 Portsmouth and then choose the second one down. If you go forward to image 608 its the 1st and 2nd line down I am having trouble reading.
1st line says appointed- abar? what does that mean?
2nd line says promoted- does it say bomber?
    Thanks in advance

First item is A Bdr - Acting Bombardier (a rank)
Second item is Bombar. - Bombardier.

Only a guess, but could it be A Bdr and Bombdr, perhaps meaning Assistant Bombardier and Bombardier? Whatever the ranks were, they were evidently inferior to corporal, which he was promoted to later.

What did a bombardier do in the 1890s? Operate cannons?
