  • Operating system boot problem or internet explorer 8?

I am curious to know if anyone has had this problem or have knowledge of it. Sorry long post.

    To recap

    First post:

I upgraded to IE8 about two weeks ago no trouble until tonight but I'm not sure its that that is causing it.

I was surfing the web and suddenely I couldn't scroll up and it just all started flickering and then when I closed it I noticed that any icons on my desktop i.e. a few IE favourties has taken on the guise of a folder on my desktop!

I restarted it went a bit berserk and then it happened again it seems to be when I want to opened more than two tabs the third being a different site.

    I haven't got a clue what's causing it.

    Second post:

Well after that episode something is defintely wrong with Laptop.

When it boots up now it makes a noise like a key is stuck on the keyboard - like a bleep bleep bleep constant noise.

    :(

    Third post:

Basically on startup it beeps a lot if I hit esc it carries on normally if I leave it I get a screen that says.

    Windows Boot Manager

    Choose operating system

Microsoft Windows Vista (which I choose by hitting enter)

    Specify Advance Tools

    Windows Memroy Diagnostics

Having told it to use Microsoft Windows Vista it carries on a works normally as far as I can see.

    Fourth post:

Well I came home tonight and no beeps booted up okay.

However I had the same Internet Explorer 8 Problem.

It seems to be when I use a forum or site from the favourites topbar or sidebar it jumps to the bottom of the screen of the site and flickers. Maybe its a graphics card problem!

I immediately closed it opened internet explorer and searched for this forum on Google opened the forum and now I am posting this reply!

I have no idea if the problem I just experienced again will manifest itself into the boot up problem again.

How many beeps when it boots up? Is it constant, or are there a limited number?

When you PC boots up it does a variety of hardware checks and it will beep a set number of times to tell you it has found a fault.

It could be a hardware problem -- try doing something other than going into IE. Doing something else for a little while and make it 'busy' to see what happens.

Also, download another browser -- Firefox for example -- www.getfirefox.com try using that for a while and see what happens.

Yes I came home tonight ready with my pen a paper to count the beeps how long they were after reading some instructions in a link Cloggie posted in the other thread.

      Lo and behold no beeps

So I am logging off soon and I haven't got time tonight tomorrow I will boot up and be ready with my pen and paper and start from there.

I think I read somewhere that Internet Explorer 8 has a rendering problem on its display!

I never use Internet Explorer (8 or otherwise) as it is so slow and full of bugs compared to the alternatives.

Just for reference, here is my reply from the other thread:

That sounds like a warning from the BIOS.

          Some useful information here:
Beep Codes - How to Troubleshoot Beep Codes - BIOS Beep Codes
BIOS Definition - What is the BIOS? - Basic Input Output System
The two links above contain lots of information about the BIOS, as well as links explaining how to access it.

Here is a list of more BIOS beep codes for different manufacturers: BIOS Beep Codes
More lists can be found by googling.

Internet Explorer 8 has started to do it again scrolls to bottom of page and won't scroll up again if I persist it renders/flickers.

I shut it and open it again go into web site again and fine. Don't know what will happen about boot up I don't have time tonight to start fiddling to be honest.

I upgraded to Internet Explorer 8 only about 2 weeks I wish I hadn't. I usually wait for a very long time before upgrading to anything because of bugs why I did it this time I'll never know. However I have read that going back to IE7 is risky or is it?

I am now thinking I would rather just do a System Recovery but that is so drastic!

              Hi Maggie,

IE8 has a "Compatibility View" feature to display websites as viewed in IE7. Maybe that would help?
For more info see: Internet Explorer 8: Features (2nd tab on the left)

It is selected for all the sites its happening on.

I think its got something to do with the graphics/colours/overloaded programming for the new tabbing and favourites layout/view.

Just a thought by a novice of course. I have no more evidence for that than the dog next door.

I think its definitely got something to do with IE8 its caused me a big problem and now it seems I have to identfy the problem because its not going to go away.

Or could be if I never open IE8 again I might not replicate it! So won't have to address it.

Have you tried using another browser like Firefox as David suggested? That should help confirm whether the issue is confined to IE8.

Just installed it to see what happens.

Am now using firefox. I used to use that but when I bought this Laptop 18 months ago decided not to download and install to many programs and see how I got on with IE again.

Who knows if it goes wrong tonight then its definitely the Laptop OS or something elsenow. I don't even know if a System Recovery would solve the problem to be honest seeing as I don't really know what the problem is.

I counted the beeps (quite a lot) had a look at the deciphering the beeps this morning... was going to count again tonight but it never happened!

Still doing it so I think I need to do something not quite sure yet what that is! :(

But I am going to speak to our IT Technican today at work.

Do you mean it's still beeping on start-up, or that you're still having display problems even when using Firefox?
Either way, I think asking your IT Technician at work is a good idea.

Beeps on start up. 2 big beeps and a lot of short ones 28 then pause and then another 18!

Thinks its the memory or hardware problem *scratches head*. Probably memory just did a Windows Diagnostics for memory and it sort of only got to 99% and then went a bit doolally.

My IT technician told me to do a few things to discount stuff which I've done struck off some possibles. i.e. peripherals, virus, fragmentation etc.

Lucky enough I am a massive backup person so thats good all my family history and other stuff is on USB sticks backs up every Sunday without fail oh yes.

I know my stuff is backed up so it probably needs to go to hospital but before that I shall do a System Recovery to wipe it clean before it goes.

My only sadness is I will be bereft of it for sometime and its my world, my only interest when I'm not out socialising or working or doing other mundane chores is my and OH's family history and social history.

Sad I know but maybe I'll catch up with my DVDs and HOUSEWORK at those times that I would normally be searching for dead ancestors and their lives!

Thank you very much Cloggie and Daj for your time and your posts and answers but I think I'm going to have to bite the bullet I'm afraid and take it somewhere.

                            :(

and the reason I wipe it clean...
