Would anyone know if someone changing their name in the first decade of the 20th century would have to do it legally?

Now, because of identity fraud, terrorism etc and the fact that more people can get credit, its harder to change your name without some legal proof.
But years ago it was simpler just to call yourself another name, so there may not be any record.~ with love from Little Nell~Chowns, Dunt, Emms, Mealing, Purvey & Smoothy
