  • Change of name proving a nightmare?

Would anyone know if someone changing their name in the first decade of the 20th century would have to do it legally?

No, you could (and still can) adopt whatever name you like.

People did sometimes put a formal notice in the London Gazette - which has searchable online archives:

Thank you for that. Had a quick glance and can't seem to find anything!

Now, because of identity fraud, terrorism etc and the fact that more people can get credit, its harder to change your name without some legal proof.

But years ago it was simpler just to call yourself another name, so there may not be any record.
