i am totally new to this

i really dont know where to start, can anyone give me advice on how to get started

so far i have traced back to my great grandparents, but thats all thishas been done through relatives

names- macneil & mcneill, swanson, bain

where do i start?

thanke as for the advice

i hav had a look and it seems quite complicated

i have also registered at genes reunited, they only seem to cater for england and wales

i hav death certificates dating back to about 1940, thats about all i have

any help appriciated

Do you have dates / places of birth, marriage and death for any of them? (from certificates or from the free BMD site FreeBMD Home Page)

You say you have traced your tree back to your great grandparents - tell us what you know about them - names / place and year of birth / place and year of death / names of children etc. - and then we can explain what your next move should be.

Taking a guess that your relatives are from Scotland, then you will need Scotlands People website, where you can instantly download certificates for a small fee.

However, tell us what you know first and someone will talk you through it.

ok, i have information on gg parents

mr william swanson - who married - margaret sinclair, all i know is that the married on 2nd feb 1917 in caithness, scotland, possibly (Bower)

and mr John alexander bain -who married - alexandrina macadie (known as Ina) on 27th Aug 1909 in Thurso Caithness

You'll need to register with ScotlandsPeople.

You can do a basic search for free, but you have to pay to get more information. However, Scottish certs are much more informative than English ones, so it's worth it.

Suggest you concentrate on one branch at a time, work backwards till you get stuck, then start on the other branches.

If you don't, you will quickly find yourself getting very confused!

When you have downloaded the marriage cert for Bain/Macadie, come back on here, give us the info and we will track him on the census, BEFORE you buy census information on SP, save you wasting credits.

I have downloaded the marriage certificate for

Swanson & Sinclair

GG Parents

they were married on 2/2/1917

Mr William innes Swanson Farm Servant, born 1895 or 1896? Parents were David and Catherine (nee Rosie)

Margaret G Sinclair , Farm Worker, born 1899, parents were John a Mary (nee Rosie)

i can email the certificite it helps

Looking at 1901 census for Scotland, there is more than one david/catherine swanson combination
is there and address on the marriage cert, or any witness names?

were mary & catherine both nee Rosie?

yes both parents are nee - Rosie

address for William Swanson is West Murkle, parish of thurso
addrss for Margaret sinclair is (looks like) seasondale Bower?
