  • 1825 Marriage Licence

What info am I likely to gain from a 1825 marriage licence.

I'm 95% sure the marriage i've found is for who I think it is.

The marriage states she's a minor & was by licence with consent of those whose consent it required.

The woman I think it is was born in 1806, so a minor. She was born illegitimate to a widowed mother who died in 1823. Am I right in thinking the marriage would of been "with consent of parents" & not "of those whose consent it required" if her mother had still been alive?

The few I have seen like this all say the same thing

" a minor, with the consent of those whom the law requires".

I think, in 1825, her widowed mother - had she still been alive - would not have been considered eligible to give consent. Usually, it would be a brother or an uncle or even a guardian ad litem, or in some extreme cases, the Bishop. Definitely not a mere woman, mother or not.

      Thanks OC.

I'll see if I can track down the licence. She had a few olders brother so hopefully one of them might be given on the licence/bond.

I have one which does give the brother as her legal guardian.

The actual marriage is recorded though "a minor, with consent of those the law requires" making no mention of her brother, so yes, the actual Bond may tell you more.
