    I'd love to know if this is my great grandfather's brother ... do you think he is wearing a railway uniform? If it is him - he was working as a railway porter in 1891 (aged 20) and living in Swinton, nr Rotherham, Yorkshire.

    I think these are likely to be his own clothes, then as today, if you are going to go to the trouble and expense of going to a studio to be photographed then you wear your best clothes rather than your work uniform.

        I think they are his own clothes by the style but if he were a station master say he would have had himself photographed in his uniform, I have one of g.g.grandad in his, and very proud he looks....:D

            In the case that he was a stationmaster, he would have had a type of cap with him and that is not on the photo. I also don't think that the suit looks like a uniform with belt.
