    Sisal worker (or maker)?

Thank you for your thoughts Mary, ...one we hadn't thought of.

James was later a school master for many years, but we don't think it says that, ...or does it?

Seems unlikely then - sisal was used in rope making.

It doesn't really look like school master, does it, although I'm pretty sure it begins with an S.

I think you're right about the S, ..but it doesn't start the same as the Scholar a few places down the page, so I can't make it fit.

Have you found him in 1841?

Sorry Gwyn. I've had a look for James in 1841 without success too.

Comparing the initial letter of the second word with others on the page, I wondered if it could be "Scool" Usher.

Was there such a thing as a school usher?

The first occupation on the next page is "Scooll Teacher"

Image 17 has a "scool" governess whose "scool" looks very similar to yours.

Is this the James Walter Bachelor who was a China Merchant in 1861?

A school usher was another name for a teacher. Comes from reading 19th. century school stories in my youth.

Usher was a word that we thought of, but didn't know of it's use in this context, so Thank you.

                          Great help thank you.
I think we have an enumerator here, who is unsure of his spelling. I note that he has filled all the ages in one column too.

                          Gillian
Please will you give the reference for that James, as I haven't found him, ...Thank you.

I do know that the Batchelor family did have a business selling china, but we have also seen records showing that James Walter worked for many years in a school in Odiham, acting as Head for his last 6 years there.

                              Thank you Gillian.
That does look like him, ..his sister Caroline Shirley is a near neighbour too.
Documents viewed this week in Hampshire tell of his long link with the school, so I'll have to persue this china link.

                                Hi,
It looks like Social Worker but I'm not sure.
I'm having difficulty recognising what Harriett does, something Maker. Is it Dress maker or is that an "l" or a "f".
I can't find the family in 1861 or 1871 but as you say in 1881 he is a Schoolmaster.
Sorry I can't help more than that,
                                Neil.

                                  Thank you for looking Neil.
I think Harriett is shown as a dressmaker (old style double S )
Gillian's link is probable for 1861, ...although no reference to the school ?
In 1871 he was still in Odiham.
                                  He died in 1890.
