WiLan and Internet HELP !!!!

I have just bought a Laptop/Notebook and am feeling very stupid even asking this question. I bought the laptop as I will need in when I come to England to stay with an elderly relative so I will NOT be able to visit Internet Cafes to get internet access.
My question is if I buy a WiLan Card how do I then connect to the Internet does the house I stay in need to have an Internet connection for this to be possible. :(

To access the internet wirelessly you need a wireless access point, if there isn't one in the house you are visiting then you will need an independant wireless dongle, these work on mobile phone technology and can be used anywhere there is a mobile phone signal, you will have to buy one of these, Google for mobile broadband for more details.
