I found Hugh Brown on the 1851 Scottish census. He was aged 18 and a prisoner in Edinburgh jail. From the National Archives of Scotland I discovered that he was tried at the High Court,Edinburgh on the 13/3/1851 and was found guilty of theft. He was sentenced to seven years transportation.
I have tried to find him by Googling for websites of criminals in Australia, where I presume he would have been sent.I also looked for him on the 1861 census just in case the sentence was not carried out.I have had no success so far.
Can anyone give me some clues on how to proceed?
    Thank you in advance.

There are lots of convict transportation websites for Australian transportees. Transportation ended in 1857, but had virtually stopped to NSW in the 1840s. WA took convicts until 1857, but I don't know about the other colonies.

This is one of the best sites, but there are many

    convictcentral.com

wikipedia also has an article including the ending years of transportation.

You would have to search each state separately for information. NSW, QLd and WA have their BMD indexes on line for free, and Vic has them for a small price. Tasmainia has 19th century records online, and SA none at all.

I have looked to see any Hugh Brown deaths between March 1851 and December 1851.There is one in Edinburgh City which I presume is the area of the jail.I have no credits so cannot see it.I know it may not have any details on it.What about records of prisoners who died? Do they exist and if so where would I find them.

He was let off on licence, offended again and was sent to Wakefield - the licence was revoked.

This still happens today - prisoners are given early release on licence, but if they reoffend, they are sent back to prison to serve out the rest of their sentence.

Yes, prisoner's deaths are recorded in the normal way.

                        Hi
There's a male prisoner in Wakefield Prison in 1861 with the initials H.B. He was 37 & was born in Scotland, he was married & his occupation was a carter. This could be the man above.

The only Hugh Brown transported to Tasmania was in 1845....so I think we can rule out that your Hugh Bown was sent to Tasmania.

It was common for prisoners sentenced to transportation to be held in old ships or hulks.
These were supposed to be short term stays until transportation but many prisoners died in the hulks.
Others would serve their sentence in the hulk and others were released early on licence.
It seems your man was released early but did not reform.
He offended again and his early release was revoked.
He then completed his sentence in Wakefield jail.
                              Cheers
