  • I need a router?

Son is leaving home this weekend (excuse me whilst I unwind the bunting) and he is taking with him the netgear wireless router that we had shared for the internet.

Now before he bought that Im sure I had an ordinary little talktalk one that came with the broadband but Im blowed if I can find it. If I cant find it - what do I have to buy to connect up again please? Son reckons that as we now have up to 8 GB that the original little modem may not be up to it anyway?

Don't think it will be Heather, my old one was way past it's sell by date and would not let us access the net, so I purchased a Belkin wireless router, a little expensive but excellent and as my laptop has wi-fi built in I can conect with the net anywhere in the house without BT line...great.
Others may know of cheaper routers which are just as good......just one suggestion.

Thanks Jen. Dont know what I need - not wireless though as itll just be this one puter when son takes his off.

Is it easy to fix? I can remember a real performance when he put this netgear one on? I was hoping I just had to plug the thing in?

Any recommendations then please people for something not expensive and easy to use.

Is it a router I need or a modem?

Heather the routers are for wireless I think (NO EXPERT) but its a piece of cake to conect, it comes with a disc which is so easy to follow.
Now that I have it I wouldn't go back to the modems (personal preference), and I don't know what's out there at the moment.
My original modem was supplied through my server, who after being with them for 4 yrs calmly told me that it was about 4 yrs out of date anyway but rather than supplying me with a more up to date free one, they suggested I browse their catalogue for one cheek!

          I would suggest a Netgear DG834.

This is a standard wired router that will replace the one being taken away.

Very easy to setup - and very reliable. We have one for our internet.

Thanks dave - they seem very expensive, I didnt realise. I did ring talktalk to try to twist their arm but they have a HG520B which seems to have a lot of bad feedback on the net about £30.

That is wireless, which you don't need!

This is what I suggest... Netgear RP614 Router - Ebuyer

Cheaper too - and you don't have to worry about wireless security.

And 84 reviews averaged at 4.5 out of 5 cant be bad.

Well maybe this will be easier...

Keep the one you currently have (buy it off him if nessacary) and then he can buy a new one for where he is going.

                    That would be much simpler.

LOL Dave, Ive tried that one with him - he is rushing in and out this evening with boxes of stuff for the move - he just said No, its tuned into his playstation or something.

Why did you recommend the second one rather than the DG834? please

A router will support any operating system.

They're just refering to the software that comes with it - which you dont really need anyway.

EDIT: And just because it doesn't say it - doesn't mean that it doesn't.

Oh and make sure to note the settings off the old one first.

                                Just because it was cheaper.

I have a DG834, so can talk you through setting it up if you need.

If you want wireless then you'll need the DG834G

Heather thats the Router I bought from them to use indoors as my laptops would not pick up the signal from the one in the Garage and so far touch wood its been fine .

You'll need to logon to the old one and write down settings such as...

                                      PPPoA or PPPoE
                                      PPP Username
                                      PPP Password
                                      VCI number
                                      VPI number

Shall we continue this via PM/email?

EDIT: I'd be very surprised if it didn't work with talktalk - ADSL (broadband via the phone line) is very standardised and routers will work with any provider. I've not yet encountered one that didn't.

Val, just out of curiousity - what is the distance between the garage and where u use laptop? And what type of walls are in between? Any metal?
