  • can anyone offer help with a marriage cert

    I have a marriage cert for :

Mary Magee & michael terence ?

    both aged 21

the date of the marriage is : 16th November 1946

It was at The Good Shepherd and ss Elizabeth and ??

** sorry but i cannot read what her occupation was - Michael was a railway labourer

He lived at 76 (looks like) Leicester Causeway Coventry

She lived at 16 (sorry cannot make out her address) but again Coventry

    ************************************************** *******
I don't really know what i am looking for with this or where to go next - we are trying to trace my mums birth mother - whose name was mary magee.
She went to Cherington, Rother Street, Shipston on Stour it was an unmarried mothers home.
I am not sure if this is going down another road that isn't the one we should be taking.
Does anyone out there have any suggestions as to where to go with this cert?

    Thanks
    Bashful

Is this Mary the same as your mum's birth mother? If you don't know, what would help you to confirm it?

I am guessing the church is this one
St Elizabeth, The Good Shepherd SS Elizabeth & Helen, Coventry

and there is a road called Leicester Causeway in Coventry - just google!

you could put an image of the bits of the cert you can't read on here and we could try to decipher it.

Hi Bashful, Have you tried searching for Mary in the 1901 census?

Jen, marriage was 1946, bride aged 21 ... 1901 would be too early

What were the father's names and occupations? This might give us something to go on for the 1911 census and maybe some more people to find who might help.

Here's a death for a Mary Curley in Coventry
              Birth Date: 14 Dec 1915
              Death Registration Month/Year: Jul 2005
              Age at death (estimated): 89
              Registration district: Coventry

              Entry number: 80

The year of birth is the same as your Mary Magee.
Did your mother see a counsellor to get her birth certificate? what was said about the details on the adoption file?

mum has always been told there is no file that papers were destroyed by a fire! But i think mum is going to have to get in touch now with the SS here & try again

It's strange that 90% of adoption records were destroyed by a fire. And even stranger that they miraculously reappear if you start to make a fuss.

Oh, if I only had £1 for every time I heard about that fire! England must have been ablaze from end to end for 50 years.

A member on here was told his adoption file had been destroyed during a bombing raid in WW2 resulting in a fire. Um...he wasn't born until the 1960s.....
