  • How do I uninstall my DVDR drive please?

A techi on another site has said I should uninstall my DVDR and then use the hardware wizard reinstall it - how on earth do you do that? (This is all following on from me being unable to copy My Documents onto the DVDS)

Oh and how do I know what software Im using for burning DVDs please? How do I find that?

If you uninstall your DVD drive Windows will automatically put it back in again when you restart. This procedure is usually carried out if the disk drive driver is suspected as being corrupt.

To uninstall your DVD drive, go to Start, Control, System, Hardware, Device Manager, open the little + sign by the side of your DVD drive if you have more than one, left click it to highlight it, right click it to select Uninstall, restart your PC. and Windows will put it back in again.

Many thanks Ron, I followed your instructions heart in mouth but it all did come back on again :o

Sadly, it doesnt seem to have made any difference though :(

Son just rushed in and I asked him about it and he says that I shouldnt try burning through windows - I need a software program to do it.

I thought I must have a software program for doing it?

I actually bought a Seagate External Desktop Hard Drive the other day, only mine is the 1 TB version. Just plugged it in and the PC recognised it right away. It appears in My Computer or Windows Explorer as any other drive would, and you can just drag and drop or copy and paste to it. You can also set your automatic backups to go to that drive just like you would to any other drive.
It took about half an hour to copy all my photos, music and family tree files to it.

I think £49.99 sounds like good value. The 1 TB one cost me 89 euros, which is about £75. I think they were selling the 500 GB one for 69 euros, which is about £59.

Depends on how much data and how often you back up as to your choice of dvd or external hard drive. Yes i would suggest you get some decent burning software, just Google there's plenty of it about.

Nero is the defacto standard for burning CDs/DVDs.

If you want a free program, try CDBurnerXP: Introduction and News as it seems to be the most popular one out there.

You can Google for anything, just type in the Google search box "cd burning software"
