  • Early censuses

Whilst collecting information for the Timeline, I have found various sites with details of early censuses (so far, 1811 and 1821).

I haven't found any reference to them on the Wiki yet (unless I am searching wrongly).

    Perhaps we could list them:

    To start:

    1821 Dean Prior Devon
    GENUKI/Devon: Dean Prior 1821 Census

    1821 Cumnor Tything
1821 CENSUS: CUMNOR TYTHING :(source: Vicar's Book, Vestry) :: FamilyTreeCircles.com Genealogy

    1821 Bedford St Peter

    1821 Bickleigh Devon
    GENUKI/Devon: Bickleigh (Near Tiverton) 1821

Off to finish dinner and eat - I hope to add to this at some time.

Not sure if you would be interested in this one:

The Pole Lane Chapel Census, 1819 (Darwen, Lancs).

The EVENTS for this one are on the IGI - however, if you order the film from the LDS, as well as the individual events (baptisms and burials) you will find each family entered as a group group, the names of the grandparents, addresses and occupations, names of previous spouses and all sorts of scurrilous stuff about illegitimate children!

For anyone who has ancestors in Darwen, this is a goldmine of information.

Thanks, OC. I think perhaps a list of available information for each of the early censuses on the WIKI would be a huge help to people.

It appears that the Orkney 1821 census indices can be purchased:

There was a census in Lichfield in 1695, but it's not online.

                  Useful thread Elizabeth

Just wish I had rellies in any of these places!

Records offices would have local censuses where they exist, so worth asking if you are going.

We were trying not to duplicate web addresses - GENUKI is certainly on the wiki
