  • Ancestry military records

I am hoping that someone might be able to help me as I my research skills are a little rusty.

I have service numbers of soldiers from the first world war and I am trying to find their medal cards and I can't work out why I can't get them!

    Thanks in advance,
    Pippa

Have you checked the National Archives site as well Pippa. Sometimes if you get just a little more info it can be helpful on the Ancestry site.

I have found that on Ancestry you often need the name (surname at least) and the number to get a good result!

.. or if you want to post some names and numbers I´ll have a look.

I don't think they are complete on Ancestry yet, certainly I've had the same problem with missimg men on there, that are on the N.A site. Then possible they are on there and the number is mistranscribed by Ancestry, I've come across that a fair few times as well.

The medal card index on Ancestry should be complete - it's the service records that aren't complete yet.

Some men had more than one number. In my own limited experience, Ancestry only "recognised" one of the two numbers.

There are certainly men not on there that are on the Documents Online site. It's my understanding from the 1914-1918 forum that they are incomplete still, and like the Service Records are being uploaded in 'batches'. However unlike the service records this is NOT being done alphabeticly, i.e either intentionally or unintentionally giving the somewhat false and misleading impression they are complete.

There is quite some discontent on there about the way they have been going about uploading these military documents. Some are of the opinion the reason it is taking so long for the M-Z to appear on the service records is, now the initial rush of new members attracted to the site on announcement of these records going 'online' has died down to a trickle, the commercial insentive to get the remaining records done is not there and it has been moved on to the back burner. Whether that's true or not who knows..but they are taking their time arn't they.

Thanks, Richard, I haven't realised that.
