Just bought one of these for myself, and another for a customer.

You just plug it into the USB port of your computer, and it works just like a memory stick.

        Hi jen,
the question is, you want to store what on this. Only data (photos, films etc.) or a complete system safeguarding shall be stored as an emergency restoration on this? Got to small quantities to 8 BG for I USB-embroider one take. And shall the data be transported by A to B and be done available there to a computer?
It much depends planned use. The size and the data transmission rate then vary according to it. An external hard disk is in it reading- / writeaccess always a little slow than an internal hard disk. At the laptop computer sure an alternative. I would prefer an internal one at the desktop. Different hard disks also can be a solution with change frameworks here.

Hi Wolf, mainly need it to backup files particularly my photo file, wouldn't like to lose that.
Not sure what would be suitable for me but all help is welcome and thanks for replying.

2 external hard disks are the best for such purposes. 3 safeguardings are recommended on different data carriers,
but 2 hand to my experience for the domestic use. I would always become the data speichern. alternately on the external hard disks these also can get faulty the loss of information is still then easily comprehensible!--, if a week has passed between the safeguardings. But it is a question of money like everything. A hard disk with 500 GB costs only insignificantly less than one with a 1 TB. -but one 1 TB - total loss for one safeguarding
the one should rely on is fatal.

Yes, operating a safeguarding at large amounts of data with DVD, in my opinion is not simple. For the pure system (Vista/Xp) and the application programs it can be good on DVD. But all external lofts let the new safeguarding programs too, thus obviously.
But a hard disk internal or external also can break!

I bought one because my computer was losing info and I wanted a safe back up.... I have read alot of reviews but do not understand technicalities.. but from what I understand they are ideal for storage and portable... there are different systems in the storage FAT 32 and another but I am lost with details.... but what I have deduced is that they are ideal for storage and saving space on your computer.. someone I know uses one for confidential reports so no information is stored on her hard-drive.....
But.. it does seem that there are reports that they are not a totally safe way of backing up information .. something about encryption and difficulty in retrieving info... but I have one because I think that it is better than nothing with this computer.

                      Hi Colin,
also external hard disks should be tested intensively now and then with SCANDISK. There is no sure system. The worst is the assumption, one would have a safeguarding. If the emergency then occurs and this backup copy makes no more restoration possible with read errors, then "good night".

I should qualify the statement that they should not be relied on as back up
The model that I bought for myself has mixed reviews and it is this model that it is said should not be relied upon.. " a good storage system but not a back-up facility, the expanation given was too technical for me
