Does anyone know what the Z after the word Invalid might indicate? He is listed as paralysed in the final column.

Invalid Z on census?

Thanks everyone.
I wondered too if it was in-valid or in -va-lid but I've never come across any other paralysed/blind etc entries with anything similar in the occupation column.
I'll have a look at a few pages either side to see if I can at least confirm whether it's a Z, a 2, or an L with a curly bit.Gillian

My guess is that the householder put invalid in the occupation column to explain why he wasn't employed and the enumerator then added the code letter Z or 2 or L or whatever when he was counting up his returns for the various employment categories.Judith passed away in October 2018

Thanks Judith - that sounds a likely explanation.Gillian

Probably a long shot, but when people left the army they were sometimes put onto 'z' class reserves. Perhaps he was invalided out of active service and placed on reserves list..though doubt whether they'd have someone unfit for service on the reserves. Can't think of another explanation though.

Thanks Janet and Richard.
I don't think there is a suitable gap where he might have been in the army.
He was a miner in 1891 so I thought there was a fair possibility that he had been paralysed in a work-related accident.
I'll keep my eye open for other instances of the word Invalid being qualified by a number or letter in other 1901 census.Gillian
