  • trouble with 1891 census!

Hi, I am trying to find Elizabeth Jane Cox bc. 1867 Challock, Berkshire and George Cox bc. 1843 Charney, Berkshire on the 1891 census. However, they might not be together as I am not sure if they were together then.
You see, there is a 25 yr age gap (roughly), and I am not sure whether they would be together or if he had a first wife.
On the 1901 there are several children. First one is born 1887, 2nd 1891 etc, however the first could be from a previous marriage, as I have a possible marriage for them Wantage 1889 which is in the right area where they should be living! I am totally stuck, bog eyed ad not sure what else to look up! Challck and Charney were quite small places and I don't know if thats where the problem lies?
As I am having trouble on this census with places of birth I also cannot find any of the children on the 1911 either!
    Thanks
    Tessie
P.s sorry its so long and muddled!

I have found George in 1851 (I think), with his parents and many siblings. As they lived on the berks/oxon border there are many variations of where they were born/are living. His birthplace is Charney, Berks, which is now Charney Bassett, nr Faringdon/Wantage, Oxon! So I am sorry as I will probably be asking loads of questions!
Looking for him in 1861/71 now.

              - edit - just realised they are too young!

                  Tessie,
Have a look at the image of the 1901 census - are you sure the age isn´t 38 and not 58, which would give his year of birth as 1863'ish - which would match with the 1871 and 1881 census I found.

Just looked at the 1901 again, does that say 38 for George and has been mistranscribed as 58?

You said you found a possible 1889 marriage in Wantage - presumably this one

                          Marriages Dec 1889
                          Cox George
                          Lovegrove Elizabeth
                          Wantage 2c 703

-which is possibly linked to this 1891 census

The children´s names in the 1891 dont really seem to match what we have in 1901-even allowing for nicknames etc.

We can dismiss that 1891 census, and presumably the 1889 marriage.
Here is the same family in 1901

I think it might be worth trying to make these fit

                                  Births Mar 1887
                                  Crook Violet Mary
                                  Wantage 2c 300

                                  Births Jun 1891
                                  Crook Gertrude Matilda
                                  Wantage 2c 297

                                  I´ll see if there´s a possible Crook/Cox marriage

Family seems to be Cox by 1893

                                    Births Jun 1893
                                    Cox Rose Emma J

I wonder if this could be mother and Gertrude in 1891 census - Gertrude listed as infant.
