Just a quick plug for Radio4's Making History. The latest series is nearly over but you can listen again to all the episodes using the BBC iplayer here:

I really enjoyed the episode about how the militia worked in the 18th century but there are lots of other bits and pieces that might fit in to your family history, including how British POWs were able to continue their education in Germany during the war.
