  • In prison - 1901

    Afternoon all,
Not the sort of thing to get excited about I know, but as much as I love my hard working Ag Lab ancestors, lacks distinct excitement...

I think I have found evidence of gg uncle being in Prison in Reading on 1901 census.

How would i go about finding out more about this?

    Thank you.

After looking at the original image it appears there are hundreds of army privates in the prison. Is this usual?
    Im confused....

I don't think there are any official records you could have access to but you might find something in a local newspaper about what happened.

Perhaps they were using the prison as a barracks?

              Hi,
Thanks for the reference. Had a look and they are all definitely listed as prisoner. I think it must be that this was the place where all military felons were sent. I wonder if there was a barracks nearby or in Berkshire at least.
I think the local paper is your best bet and if they have archives they might be able to answer that question.

Gonna have to call Reading Library I guess then.
                Thanks Margaret.

Just emailed a request to Berkshire Record Office - very helpful.

Thanks Jackie, looks very interesting - frantically trying to make out names on the photos... lol

                        They do.
Dont know whether I feel sorry for them - they may not have done anything too bad, or worried that one of them could be my ancestor.

Fingers crossed the record office will come back with some good news.

They're not the most flattering of photos but in a strange sort of way wouldn't you like to find one of someone connected to your tree? (Or is it just me that's odd? :o)

                                  Hi Val,
I am very tempted yes, but if all they come back with is his name in a 'register' will be mightily disappointed. I want the intrigue now - the prison records, his mug shot, the lot.... lol.

Providing he is in the records - this is what i should find out - "The calendars of prisoners usually give, name, address, age, charge, previous convctions, plea and sentence"
