  • Locating Great Grandad's Birth

Can anyone better than me at FreeBMD find the birth of my great grandad please?

    Name: Henry (Harry) George Hemmings/Emmings
    Born: ~1895
    Place: Southfields or Wandsworth, London

I cant find it for the life of me. I wonder if he was never registered.

There's a birth (and war record) for a Henry Charles George Hemmings born about 1898 ,
        Hammersmith or Fulham.

There's a birth for Martha Caroline Hemmings in 1899. She's the daughter of the 1901 I found.

Are you sure he had just George as a second name because the census had Charles as father.

Yeah thats them. This is my Wayman thing where the dad Charles might be really Charles Wayman. I just wanted the birth cert of Henry to see what it said.

What an annoying side of the family it is. Henry was called Harry, Martha called herself Phyllis, Hemmings and Emmings are really Wayman.... :o

The begger with the pension record had parents Henry George and Emily Ellen Hemmings and lived in Ealing (at that time anyway).

I think this may be the marriage

                    Q/E Dec 1893 Wandsworth Vol 1d Page 1231

                    Blunden Alfred
                    Emmings Charles
                    Freeman Arthur Compton
                    Galley Alice
                    Tomes Elizabeth

This is the only likely entry I can find the birth

                    Q/E June 1894 Wandsworth

Yeah thats my tree. I have the Charles/Alice marriage cert and that is the right one Night Owl. I've got the service record where his name is Henry George Hemmings of 56 Bennerley Road Wandsworth Common.

Thanks Night Owl, that birth of Harold Hemming does look likely although I dont know where the middle name of George came from. People always called him Harry which would suggest Harold but on official documents he always put Henry.

                            New info:

My mum remembers his birthday was the last one in the year, probably November.

The service record, after reading it again says he enlisted 27/01/1913 and age at enlistment is 18 and 2 months. Which agrees with my mum.

So the birth would be December quarter of 1894 which rules out Night Owl's Harold Hemming unfortunately.
