  • some witnesses please

good morning!! today i received the marriage cert for john morton and marian vye gadd, at st mary's in marylebone on 16 aug 1865. john was the son of richard william morton and mary wyatt. marian was the daughter of thomas gadd and mary ann wills.

i would like some help with the marriage witnesses please.
they are francis wills, j.gant, henry george sutton, katie gadd, eliza snowden and henry wills.

francis and henry are most likely cousins of marian, or her uncles.
j.gant is john gant, marian's future brother in law.
katie gadd is most likely a cousin of marian, or her sister catherine ellen, who married john gant in 1869.

i have no idea who henry sutton or eliza snowden is. can anyone help me find out who they are?

This is the only Henry George Sutton I can see who was old enough to be a witness in the 1860's:

    Deaths Jun 1905
    Sutton Henry George 78 Fareham 2b 343

But of course he might now have always used his middle name!

He's on the 1901 census in Fareham, but no place of birth. Seems to have a son Wm H G Sutton aged 45, no place of birth (they are both listed as visitor to Laura M Sloane-Stanley - very hard to read though! lol)

i hate it when they're middle names don't appear on the census.
he was born 1827, so he could be an uncle, or maybe a family friend?
laura doesn' ring any bells either.

Possible! There ought to be a marriage too as the 1901 "son" was listed as married.

I had focussed on him being named for his "father"!

i think this might be george sutton's marriage.

I'm sorry this wont help you find the missing witnesses but please remember not all witnesses were friends or family of the bride and groom. Sometimes they are just members of that particular church or Parish. A lot of the witnesses at my family weddings in Somerset were not related in anyway, it was just their job.
