Rather than repeat the information her it is possibly better to direct you to the Pontefract FHS pages where a full explanation (including the parishes that adopted the system) is available.
Dade Registers

There were other clergymen in other counties who followed similar principles of giving more than just the basic details in registers, but none were as full as Dade.

thank you guy, i'm up to the point where parish registers are going to get handy, and couldn't figure out what they were exactly.
i'll check out the link.

was the same information used for marriages?
