  • Effusion on the brain of child in 1910 - what was it?

Just received death cert of 5 months old child who died from
    Laryngeal cough 3 months
    Effusion on brain 3 days.

Would that be fluid on brain?

    Did google briefly...thanks.

It appears to be a brain haemorrhage (sp?). Can be preceded by fits, or be a complication of scarletina, or can be genetic. I soppose if there was a gentic weakness there, then three months of coughing might have caused it, poor mite.

Thanks OC...my poor grandmother lost another child in 1922 from meningitis aged 5 months too. That was what sent her over the edge...literally...6 months later.

Oh I just looked it up! It could also be a collecting of pus in the linings of the brain after bacterial meningitis, the poor little thing.........

Thanks Barbara for looking it up. We moan about the NHS but both the children who died, died at home...no hospital care even for them.
