Yahoo - I'm thrilled to bits but have been gallivanting at a family wedding in Southampton. Am wending my way back up north and will be "home" tomorrow. The following is from memory...........

James Dixon Urquhart born 1864 ish is on the 1901 census with his wife Sarah (Todd) and Eva, Lily and James in Yorkshire - Mirfield. My probalem is that I've only been able to find James D on one previous census - I think it was 1871??? with his father William born in Canada and his mother Elizabeth Dixon (born Stockton I think) and a brother Walter.

From William and Elizabeth's marriage cert (can't remeber date) I know that William's father was called James and a farmer - presumably in Canada and that Elizabeth's father also James was a greengrocer, presumably Stockton. Any help with this family would be appreciated..............

Am on a loaned computer and will be back in the den of Derby tomorrow to follow any developments.

      Many many thanks
      J

ps Thanks Borobabs for good wishes

        Hi jane!

I think it must have been the 1881 census you found James on:

        40 Hodgson St Wallsend, Northumberland

Wm. URQUHART Head M 43 Engine Fitter b Nova Scotia, North America
Elizabeth URQUHART Wife M 33 b Stockton, York
James URQUHART Son 16 Errand Boy b Stockton, York
Walter URQUHART Son 7 Scholar b Darlington, York

I'm not having any luck with them in 1871 and 1891 either!

I'm worried that Elizabeth is 33 above, but had been married 18 years (saw marriage in 1863)? I realise it's possible, but am wondering if she is the same wife, or maybe her age is underestimated?

I couldn't see a birth reg for either son.

Jane, probably you already have James's birth certificate? But if not, his birth registration is listed on the Tees Valley BMD website in 1865, Stockton-on-Tees.

There's a birth on Tees Valley BMD site (covers Stockton) for James URQUHART in 1865

Tees Valley Indexes - Register of Births, Deaths & Marriages.

Which must be this on one freebmd

            Births Jun 1865
            Urguhart James
            Stockton 10a 81

I've checked the image & it's a typed page so am guessing it been misread when typed & should be URQUHART.

There is a will and separate inventory on Scotland's People for James Urquhart farmer, Burngrains, parish of Methlick, d. 10/12/1900 at Burngrains, testate, father of William Urquhart, which could possibly be your William's father but unlikely as he would have to be very old when he died. If we can find him on a census then hopefully we can find out if it's possible or not.

Wouldn't he be too young to be William's father?

                            Could be a brother?

I'm a bit confused by the Nova Scotia thing. It's seems really odd to say that once and Scotland all the other times. The other way round I could understand.

Oh my goodness - you've found buckets. I've been struggling with this crowd for ages -EVEN FINDING JAMES' BIRTH - magic. so I've obviously got to send for his birth cert. I'll now go and check these census refs. I too am confused by the Nova Scotia thing - how can I find out which is correct?

Also - any chance of finding Elizabeth Dixon and her family pre - marriage?

Thank you all I'm mightily impressed

If we could find a birth / baptism for William in Nova Scotia with the right father's name, and find his family in Canadian records such as censuses or whatever, I suppose it would be very likely to be the right one. The trouble is, if he really came from Scotland, there are so many Urquharts from Scotland and so many named William or James that it could be difficult to know if we find the right one without more accurate info about where exactly in Scotland.

yes that's right Southwick that's where we started but I'd really like to find James in the 1891 census. (this crowd are Mother in law's). He married Sarah in June 1892 in Mirfield and at that time was a postman. Thanks for your help

Kiterunner - I was afraid you were going to say that - the Scottish connection seems a no hoper without more detail. But hey ho I didn't even know he was from Scotland (apart from the name of course) until the day before yesterday. That is of course if he was from Scotland but then why say Nova Scotia in 1881.
                                      I'm confused.

                                        Sestinis

Last Thursday I visited the LMA to find records on George Vincent Sestini. He's on Ancestry's new parish records from the LMA I thought. While there I looked for his baptism (Feb 1802) in a few of the Westminster parishes without luck. Is there an idiots guide to London parishes, where they are and which Records Office holds which records???? The staff at the LMA, although helpful, seemed to think that I should have been at Westminster Records Office.
I must admit I find London very confusing - 6 hours at LMA produced zero results - at this rate I'll never sort them out........

My OH ggggrandmother was Amelia Mary Wilson nee Baggs. She named her first child Amelia Sestini Wilson. According to a book Amelia Mary's grandmother was an italian opera singer who sang at the King's theatre. I've found out loads about Giovanna Sestini but cannot prove any link. This is what last week's trip was supposed to sort. Any help would be appreciated
                                        ;) with optimism.
                                        J
ps have found a couple of Sestinis living in Cheltenham, born in London in 1841 and 1851 but that's it
