  • registering an illegitimate birth

i know when an illegitimate birth was registered, it was usually the mother that registered it. and the father's name would only be on the cert if he attended at the registrar.

but if the father was present at registration, would the birth appear in the indexes under both parents names or just the mother's?

What year did the registration take place? Were the parents living together as a couple? I think it is likely that the registration would be in the Father's name if he were present. check both. If the birth occurred after 1912 then the mother's maiden name is recorded on the index of births as well.

thanx for that, i was thinking in general, because my ancestor is unlikely to have had a the father mentioned. the cert should be here next week.

If the father's name is on the certificate and the parents weren't married, then it should be indexed under both surnames.
