  • Birth District?

    Hi Folks,

I have an Elizabeth R. Pudney on the censuses from 1881 to 1901 which give her birth year as circa 1879, and her place of birth is always Woolwich - sometimes in Surrey, sometimes Essex and occasionally Kent!

I have found the birth of an Elizabeth Rachel Pudney in 1879 in the district of W. Ham. Would that be the district for Woolwich, please? Any guesses?

    Many thanks,

    Chris

West ham is Essex it is now classed as East London, Woolwich is south of the river.

Registration district after 1868 would have been Woolwich.
Prior to that date I think it came under Greenwich.

If Dinah is Dinah H Mason then this might be her daughter:

              Births Jun 1879
Mason Elizabeth Rachel Woolwich 1d 1039

The birth I found was in Wisbech district (Norfolk) but it doesn't cover King's Lynn. However in 1871 Dinah H Mason was b in Terrington which is Wisbech District

Oh, that's wierd!! I had assumed that Dinah and Al;fred were pretending to be married and their child (or Dinah's child) was reg in her maiden name because of that. HOWEVER!! There is a marriage and it's BEFORE the birth I found, BUT......it seems to be possible to a different Mr Pudney!

Oooh Merry! You have opened up another can of worms! This blinkin' family has been a nightmare, as you will probably remember - how could anyone forget the marriage ofmy dear Rachel Willis to William Pudney..........?

Yes, well, going back to Elizabeth R. Pudney - her parents are actually Charles Pudney and Dinah Harriet Mason who were married in 1875 (I have the cert). Why he decided to call himself Alfred on one of the censuses is beyond me! This Charles and Dinah also had another daughter - Louisa Emily Pudney (I have the birth cert), who married umpteen times (but we won't go down that road today LOL!). I believe Elizabeth R. Pudney married William E. McLewee in 1913 in Edmonton, Middx. Strange irony is that I believe her sister Louisa Emily also married a George Henry McLewee, so perhaps these two McLewee chaps were brothers.

Have you all lost the will to live................?

Maybe Charles and Alfred are one and the same? Just going back to earlier censuses to see if they are brothers!! lol

If there's only one man, then forget that birth I posted in #7.

Hmmm....Charles Pudney in 1871 and 1861 is the same age as Alfred Pudney in 1881 and born same place (no brother called Alfred), so maybe he changed his first name?

In which case, there's no interesting scandal! lol

Just thought I would throw another spanner in the works - just to keep you lot on your toes, you understand! Charles' brother - Harry Pudney - married Dinah's sister who was Emma Elizabeth Mason in 1879. Bit of interbreeding going on here, but have found this occurrence on more than two occasions in this family. They were not averse to altering their names when it suited them either, with totally different names from birth certs to censuses.

                                    Gawd give me strength..........

Aww! You've all run away as soon as I mentioned my Rachel Willis and William Pudney marriage..........

Anyway, back to Elizabeth R. Pudney birth - can I assume that the one I found on the full Ancestry BMD for W. Ham is not correct? Back to trawling through I guess for another look-see......

                                        Many thanks everybody,
