Wm Slater married his 2nd wife in 1872 at Coventry.

He was born c1809. According to 1881 census was born Warwick, whilst 1891 census lists his place of birth as Hook, Oxfordshire.

According to 1872 marriage cert his father was John Slater, labourer.

His occupation at the time of his marriage was gardener.
In 1881 farm labourer and 1891 general labourer.

I'd like to find out who his 1st wife was, if he had any children etc... I've tried BMD up to 1872 but it's too broad a search.

Can anyone please find him on any censuses between 1841-1871 and provide me with the missing information?

Ancestry isn't working at the moment so you might have to wait a while!

Without Ancestry I may be wrong, but in 1861 he SEEMS to me married to a Ruth Slater who was 37 at that date. They were in Coventry District (this is from FMP index!)

I'm wondering if her age is correct, as, though second wives are often younger, it would be fairly unusual to have two younger brides.

And the main reason I say that is because there's this:

      Deaths Dec 1869
      Slater Ruth aged 65 Coventry 6d 309

which would make her his age.

The age on the FMP 1861 census image looks like 57, not 37 so that death is probably the right one.

          1861 household consists of

          William 53 b Oxfordshire
          Ruth 37?
          Thomas 21
          Eliza 11

I only tried to work out the birth place of William. There could be others in the house with a different surname.

Just found this via IGI ..........

Do you think it's a coincidence?

William Slatter maried Ruth Deacon 12th October 1829, Stoneleigh, Warwick

                  I wondered about that one.

I wonder where Ruth was born? Elaine would be able to tell us that!

They might have married near her birthplace and then gone back to Oxfordshire.

I suggested Warwickshire as a birthplace on FMP, but Ruth's entry than vanished, suggesting she wasn't born there, so............
