Has anyone ever upgraded on Ancestry before their membership ran out?

I was helped on here to find some Canadian info and I realise now that more of the family went to Canada and I would rather like to look at more of the passenger lists rather than keep asking. Have just enquired about upgrading my membership for the last 4 mths I have left and was told I would have to purchase the new membership and wait for a refund on the old. Does anyone find this ludicrous???

According to posts on other genealogy sites, that "deal" seems par for the course. I think "they" (those at the chalk face dealing with inquiries) may have been instructed to offer this solution, re upgrades/accessing new data.

I do think they are becoming rather greedy towards current loyal customers.

Thanks for that, I feel their manner has changed. There was no room for negotiation just a no...not the way I would expect a business especially in this climate. I just never dreamed it would be impossible to upgrade for the rest of my present membership, got a big fat 5 on their telephone survey!

I have just been reading this. I have only just joined Ancestry after the free trail and wanting to upgrade to the premium. As I was not quick enough to change before they took the money for an essentials membership my fault I know. They say or the way it is worded I will receive prorated refund for time remaining. Does this mean it does not happen automatically. And for some reason the membership will run out on the 20th May 2010 its not even May yet?????
What do you think. Has anyone else upgraded, and how long did they wait for the refund?
        Thanks Lynda

I've done an upgrade in the past and found the refund is usually paid a week or two after you have upgraded.

Thanks very much for this I was just wondering if it was going to be more hassle than it was worth

Lynda - I've found that it pays to upgrade over the phone - use the UK number 00 44 800 404 9723 - it's not freephone from Spain but I used it last week and it didn't cost much.

Explain that you really wanted the Premium membership but they seemed to have signed you up for Essentials but don't want to be out of pocket by upgrading. They usually work out a deal that will be beneficial to you, with possibly an extra month added on for free for any inconvenience etc.

I shall give that a try later on. Thank-you very much. The calls to the UK are not that much as we are signed up with BT (of all people) for our UK calls it is working out a lot cheaper that Telefonica. I shall see if I can make a deal with them.
