Robotham mystery!

Hi all,

I had almost given up on trying to find the name of my gggrandad's mother when I recently got some info.

His name was George Robotham b.1871 in Staffordshire. His father is listed as Enoch Robotham b.1841. The only marriage we can find for him is to Alice West but she was his second wife. We couldn't find his mother.

Then I was sent some info from the 1881 census:
The only George in the 1881 census born in Staffordshire around 1871 is:

This leads me to think that a Challingsworth may have been George's mother (if this is in fact my George). I haven't been able to get a birth certificate for him as I cannot get enough information.
Can anyone help? I may be on a wild goose chase but this is the only clue I have to follow at the moment in order to find George's mother!

In 1891, Enoch jnr is married to Caroline. They married in 1888.

I have ordered the birth certificate. Sounds like I might be a bit mixed up.
As far as I know, Enoch (1841) 's father was also Enoch (b. around 1812).

George and his older brother Enoch are not Alice's children although she had three more children with their father. It seems that perhaps young Enoch and George were given up to another family or with their mother during their early years and their first mentions are in the 1881 census.

The first place I can find Enoch (Robotham) is in 1871. He's a Stone Mason. He's married (I think!!), but not with his family :o

There is a baptism record for a Nancy Hickinbotham in 1816, daughter of John and Nancy. I think she is Enoch's mother.

I think Elaine (Spain) helped us rule this one out,

I got excited for a minute with those Hickinbothams, but have found young Enoch (1864) in 1891 married and still living in Staffordshire.

Theres a possibility they could be related though as they use the same first names as our family or its a coincidence.

Thank you Tacey, these ones are definatly ours, but i don`t think the Hickinbothams are, we have young Georges marriage cert to Frances Stroud in 1891 and have just sent for Enoch seniors second marriage to see if it gives us any clues.

The Caesar we have was Georges son born 1892 and died in WW1
