I wonder if someone would be kind enough to improve this for me please. I have tried brightening it up but, as you can see from the second photo, it highlights the dust etc.

You could remove the 'dust' with your clone stamp and/or the blur tool~ FOR PHOTO RESTORATIONS PLEASE SCAN AT A RESOLUTION OF 300-600 WITH THE SCALE AT 100% MINIMUM ~ http://restoreandcolour.brainwaving.co.uk

Hi Sarah
Chrissie ~ 2 quickies from me using your second pic.
The tools I used were
Blur tool @ 100% and a soft brush for the top part of the sky.
I don't particularly like totally smooth skies, so left the rest with its slight graininess.
I also used the Blur Tool for some of the little dots in the sea.
Used a very small brush for these dots to avoid getting smooth sections of sea.
Cleaned up everywhere with the Clone Stamp.
The dark area (foreground left) ~ you could spend time with Clone Stamp and blur tool etc. if you want to preserve any detail but I couldn't be bothered, so I used the Burn Tool set at abt 20 exposure (midtones) and kind of faded the 'burn' out towards the top so it's not completely flat ~ just a matter of choice and it probably won't show up on here anyway !!!!
Applied a Photo Filter to the 2nd version for fun (Cyan)

Hi Rachel and Chrissie!
I didn't do much clean-up on my version... just ran it through the ColorEfex Brilliance/Warmth filter (free with my Bamboo Fun ) and then ran a Hot Pixels Fix filter a couple of times, and got rid of the worst remaining scratches with the spot healing brush. ColorEfex and Hot Pixels Fix are not included with Elements - they're plug-ins - ColorEfex came with my graphics tablet, and Hot Pixels Fix is part of DCE Tools.
Chrissie - If you'd like me to darken the bottom left corner area to even it out more let me know.Last edited by Cloggie; 12-04-09, 18:36.Sarah

Hi Chrissie,
Here's another one, using only Photoshop Elements 6, without plug-ins or extras.
You already have all the tools necessary with Elements - it's just a matter of trying things out and learning what you can do. There are lots of different ways of approaching things in Photoshop and in Elements. Here's what I did in this case:
- First I copied the background layer by pressing Ctrl-J.
- Then in the background layer copy I adjusted the lighting by using Enhance > Adjust Lighting > Shadows/Highlights.
- Then I played around with Enhance > Adjust Color > Color Variations.
- Then tried out some of the different blending modes in the layers pallette - click on Normal under Layers in the layers pallette on the right of the screen, and then you can select different blending modes instead of "Normal". I settled on "Color" blending mode as it gave a smoother and richer effect. You can also adjust the "Opacity" to make the effect less intense.
- Then I flattened the image back to 1 layer, by clicking on Layer > Flatten Image.
- Finally, I used the Spot Healing Brush and Blur tools to remove/even out the scratches.
