  • Coffee House Keeper

one of my rellies married the Daughter of a Coffee house Keeper what exactly would that entail ??? would it be a shop ???? it was in 1863 and they lived in Southwark

  • #2
Did she end up with the surname Starbuck or Costa?

As I understand it, coffee houses were what we'd call cafés - but were treated more like a pub - where the men (usually) went to talk business and politics.

Val, both my great-great-grandparents were "Coffee House Keepers" when they married in the 1850s.

On all the censuses he was a Coffee House Keeper, but on his death certificate he is a Hotel Keeper! (1882) By that time he'd progressed to a better neighbourhood too. :D

                      Coffee Houses

Coffee Houses all over London provided facilities where businessmen could meet investors. Some specialised in what is now the "Futures" market and some in investment in companies. Some were simply places where local businessmen could meet to do smaller deals.

The most famous Coffee House in the 17th & 18th Century was Lloyds in the City of London. The business carried out there developed from making deals to insure individual ships and cargo into the biggest Insurance organisation in the world. That business is still called Lloyds.

A2A is weird (unless it's me of course!)

Tried it again as I was only getting one result earlier

                          This time I had a date range ~ 1875 - 1900
in the 'one or all of these words' box I put the street name
                          Next box ~ a surname
                          Place ~ street name (again)

This time I have 36 results and the 1st four are mine

Really excited over this thread as my Leopold Gerlach was a coffee house keeper in London in the 1900's. When he died in the 1920's he left lots of properties in Islington so must have done quite welll from all that caffeine! Just wish I could trace a birth certificate for him!

Do you need any help looking for him ?
Or have you done it all and he's one of those impossibles ?

Ah just found a Philip Gerlach (Coffee House Keeper - 1901) so presumably they were all from Germany ?

Found Leopold on the 1911 census but when I put in Germany as place of birth, he disappeared :(

So that means that, either he didn't say he came from Germany at all, or he only mentioned the place-name...or he specified teh region - e.g. Prussia, Hesse, Saxony, Bavaria, Westphalia
