Could someone please look at the 1871 census RG 10 1686.
Thomas Crowder aged 42.He is the first one on the page.To me it looks like ---- Pensioner Night att ----- Hall.
I think he was a military man.
    Thanks
    Fran

Can't read the word before "pensioner". The first letter doesn't resemble anything else on the page. "Night Attt. Essex Hall". Might not be "Essex" but does this link perhaps have a bearing? Valerie Argent
From the birthplaces of the children I'd say he's definitely military.

The full census ref. is RG10 Piece 1686 Folio 144 Page 1

        My best effort is:

Sergt Pensioner Night Attt (abbreviation for Attendant) (something) Hall

I can't get the name of the Hall, which might need some local knowledge of Colchester!
