Could this be it?
The captain of a covered barge or lighter has charge of the
boat and its cargo. He takes care of the lines, shifts the boat, pumps
the boat, and makes minor repairs. He tallies and signs cargo on and
off the boat and is responsible for the cargo. The captain directs the
loading and unloading of the boat and gets the boat ready to load.
Lighter seems to be another word for a bargeJohn

I agree with John, some of my cousin's OH's family from Hull area were bargemen and lightermen.
I notice your man lived in Kingswinford, that's a name familiar to me as I had to go to GENUKI and look it up while researching my gran's family. Maybe he worked the canals around Birmingham?Last edited by GallowayLass; 07-04-09, 16:20.

Galloway Lass.
I go back to 1666 so far in Kingswinford. and am still here :D Stoke is quite a way from here, so if it is to do with canals, he probably worked near K/Ford.
Thanks.
John.
Thanks for that informationPam
