  • How can you tell?

Clara Mason was abandoned by her husband Thomas c 1872. When admitted to the Lambeth workhouse in 1877, she said he had left about 5 yrs ago, & gave the name of someone who might be able to find him.

Thomas was born Maidstone c 1830

Exhaustive searches in the 1881 census have been abortive. There is another Thomas b Maidstone of a similar age, but "my" Thomas Mason worked in the stationery business.

We know he was alive in March 1880, because he registered his mother's death then.

There is a Thomas Mason who dies June 1880 aged 49 in Lambeth, so that fits age wise. But...

If the address wasn't that on the earlier death certificate or the occupation wasn't exact, how could you tell?

(There was a Thomas Mason in Lambeth Workhouse of a similar age, who was a plasterer)

Tricky. Especially as if he deserted his wife he might have changed his name too.

Have you looked at the address from the March 1880 death cert?

Short answer Phoenix - sometimes you just CAN'T tell, sorry.

(But you could track all candidates backwards and forwards and see where that takes you).

That thought had occurred to us, Nell! He could have left the country, changed his name, he was always vague about his birthplace.

He had had a decent job in London & could afford a decent house, but I assume he had fallen upon hard times (perhaps he drank?) or why didn't the authorities demand he take care of his family if he were able?

OC, we have got interested in a lot of Masons along the way! Matters aren't helped by Clara having a Mason ancestor. It is such a flipping common name.
