Forward Path Attenuator

Engineer was here today to move my modem.
Before he left he fitted this 6 db forward path attenuator
Does anybody know what this is and if I really need it.
Or will i just leave it on.

Used to adjust signal level to within recommended range, preventing overloading and distortion. Why would you want to remove it?
