  • At my wits end

    Hello everyone

Ive been searching and searching for my 5xGrt Granduncle Charles Abraham Pote who was born c1842 in Dalston Middlesex.

He was a Clock and Watchmaker.

I have him on all census but the 1881 and 1891. He died in Wolverhampton in 1893 and he married a lady named Lucy Augusta Riley in 1876.

I had some help last night off Elaine and came up with some intresting info which Im trying to verify.
Elaine found a newspaper article referring to a Charles Pote who was in some trouble in 1882 whilst in Rhyl.

Any help locating him on the 81 and 91 census would be great as Im now losing hope:(

    Thanks in advance

    Danny

Going on what Sabrina said in the other thread, I looked for the Benbow family in 1881 Charles was lodging with in 1871 and found a William Pope (father-in-law) living with them. This should confirm or discredit the 1871 Charles Pope as being yours.

      Hiya Guy

William Pote mistranscribes as Pope is indeed my 6xGrt Grandfather. He was a Master Clock and Watchmaker aswell as a Jeweller and an Umbrella maker.

Frederick Benbow married my 5xGrt Aunt Mary Ann Pote.

So is the 1881 William Pope with the Benbow family your man?

          - if so he seems to have changed his place of birth

            Hi Elaine

That is Charles father William. William was born in Bristol and Charles took on the same job as his father.

I did some googling last night and came across the guy that apprenticed my Charles. His name was John Martin Baab and he was mentioned in the London journal for Arts and Sciences (Patents).

This is probably going off the beaten track, but is Henry Pote b. 1839 Dalston, Middx. one of yours? He was an umbrella maker and living in Walsall in 1881 and 1891

Why do I feel all this is familiar? I'm sure I've chased the umbrella maker before!

Henry is indeed one of mine, Henry is Charles brother.

We have chased the Pote family before but not Charles, we were chasing William the father.

Do you know the name of any of his children?

1881 Walsall, Staffs: Henry and Jane: children are John W H, William ? H, Henry, mary A ?

Was Henry a family name he preferred using?

**EDIT** Just seen your post above.

If the newspaper clipping is anything to go by and the Charles Pote in that was indeed my man then perhaps he was in prision.

Edit- just realised that the trial never began untill 1882.

As I dont have them on the census I wasnt sure about kids.

Ive come to the conclusion after Pam's find of a daughter that the surname must be really badly transcribed as not to show Charles, Lucy or Florence.
