  • Help with dating photos, please

I've just received these photos from a cousin

The Morralls - a set on Flickr

with the help of Britec, Rachel & Wendy, I've managed to download them, but can anyone help me with dating them.

    In particular

    The 4 children
The 2 single women - 1 is very faint.
the single man sitting at an angle - the other is my grandad, so should be able to date it.

The old couple I know was the 1930s, and the group looks like the '50s - depending on whether the schoolboy is my dad or his brother.

I don't think there is enough detail to tell on the 2 horse pics or the young child.

    Thanks
    Helen

I think the young child is a boy, in which case, we are probably talking about 1902 ish when they put boys in dresses. As for the women, I'd say around 1890 or 1900, judging by the style of dress.

Do you know where the photos were taken, as it is possible that they might form part of a history of a town. For example I have family connections with Leatherhead in Surrey and am now trying to work out which was the bootmakers in North Street.

The woman in the dark bodice I would suggest dates from somewhere between 1889 and 1893 going by the sight kick up at the shoulder seam and also by the style of her hair. After 1893 I would expect to see more flounciness of the upper sleeve as this was the year that the Gigot sleeving came into fashion.

Is there anything on the back of the photo of the small child to tell us the name and address of the photographer ?

It says FINE ART STUDIO on the front of the mount, but there's no name

I only have these scans. A cousin uploaded them. I'll be emailing her tonight, so I'll ask her.

I think the lady in the dark clothing could be my grGrandmother who died in 1906 at the age of 24.
The other lady maybe her daughter, b 1905.

All the photos should have been taken in or around Barrow. They should all be members of my family, although I can't place a group of children that would fit the 4 all together.

I think the young child made be a baptism photo.
We're talking plain working class families here. Not the type to dress boys in frilly dresses. I agree that it's probably a boy, though.

Hi, all small children were dressed alike untill well into probably the 1920s, this had happened for centuries, a small boy would be "breeched" when he was about 4, but in late victorian times this could be much older. Often it's necessary to look at the childs toys, ie a doll, it's a girl, hoop, kite whip, it's more likely to be a boy. But the fact that the family were ordinary working class wouldn't make much difference, even though after all that I agree it's most likely a baptism photo......:D

                Limited reply via my mobile.
Don't disagree with boys in dresses, just that clothes would be plainer than this. The boys in the other pic have certainly been breeched.
