  • Help with John Penny born c1750 please!

I am looking for the birth and death dates of John Penny.

John married Elizabeth Knight on 5th April 1777 at West Camel Somerset. I think his father was also called John (just to confuse matters!) but this is not confirmed.
John and Elizabeth's son Charles lived and died in the West Camel/Mudford areas of Somerset, between 1778 -1842.

    Many Thanks

    Stu

According to Freebmd, West Camel is in the reg dist of Yeovil (1837)

Do you have an approx year of birth ?

      Yes Rachel,

Its about 1750. I am basing that on the date of marriage though!

      Regards

Looked on Freebmd (wishful thinking there !) also IGI and Freereg :( nothing useful so far.
Think you need someone with Parish Records on CD

If you search the Somerset England: Evercreech Parish 1538 - 1890 database on ancestry, there is a John Penny born about 1751 in Evercreech, which is about 5 miles from West Camel, I think. These records give very little information though.

              Hi Zoejg
Where do you look on Ancestry ?
I've been finding it difficult to navigate on there since their recent changes

              It's OK .. found it ! ;)

                Ok thanks for that.

Was there anything interesting there? As I don't currently have access to Ancestry.

Nothing interesting at all, I'm afraid - can't even tell what sort of record it is. But at least it's a starting point for possibly looking at the parish records.

I've cross-checked in the IGI and there is a baptism record for a John Penny in Evercreech on May 23 1750 but he is recorded as having died in 1754. If that John Penny corresponds to the record I mentioned earlier, then he's obviously not 'your' John Penny :(

                    Hi Stu

Have you had alook at the 'Somerset Coalfield Connections' on rootsweb?

They have a over 90 Penny's on there, but be warned there are a few mistake too.
