  • Missing GGG Grandfather

I have posted this before on another forum with no luck - am hoping I might be more successful here!

Frederick James Head b. abt. 1834 Eastbourne, Sussex
marries Sarah Woolley in 1855 Lynsted, Kent

They appear together on only one census 1861.
    Mistranscribed surname James
Source Citation: Class RG9, Piece 567, Folio 51, Page 1

I cannot find Frederick on any census after this.

    They had the following children

    Frederick b. abt. 1853 Middx.
    Fanny Harriet b.1856 Kent
    Cornelius b. 1857 Kent d. 1861 Eastbourne, Sussex
    Louisa Rebecca b.1860 Kent
    George Edward b.1863 Eastbourne
    Ernest Edmund b.1865 Eastbourne
    Wallace b.abt. 1867 Eastbourne
    Frank Rupert b.1869 Eastbourne

On the 1871 census Sarah is with children in Eastbourne.
In 1879 Sarah is 'in service' in Nottinghill, London!
1881 Sarah with sister in Hastings

I can account for all the children after 1881 except George, Ernest, Wallace and Frank.

To sum up Frederick James goes missing after the 1861 census, Frank was born 22.6.1869 so he must have been around until 1868! The four boys go missing after the 1871 census.

I'd be so grateful if anyone can help me find them.

Only if he was their father! lol

What was Sarah's marital status on the various censuses from 1871 onwards?

Do you have a copy of the marriage certificate and if so, what is the groom's age please? Also his father's name and occupation

On the 1861 you quoted Frederick is an engineer - millwright, aged 26

There is a Frederick Head on 1871 who is a millwright engineer and born Eastbourne, but he is 54 and is living in Poplar with a 38 year old wife called Frances.

Also I've just noticed that the wife, Frances on 1871 seems to come from the same place in Kent that the wife Sarah in 1861 comes from

Frederick is the father of all the children - that is if Sarah is being truthful!
Sarah states married on all census.

On the marriage certificate Frederick's aged is 21, father Frederick William Head, Engineer.

The Frederick you have found in Poplar is Frederick James father, he is living with Sarah's sister Frances! Complicated I know!!

the birth cert of one of the children should confirm whether he was the father

              FRANK RUPERT HEAD
              JAS 1869
              Dist: Eastbourne
              vol:2b
              page:57

I would order this from the GRO site/local RO Eastbourne. NOT through Ancestry (as they rip you off)

                there is a death

                Francis Head
                Birth Year:abt 1869
                Year of Registration:1905
                Quarter of Registration:Jan-Feb-Mar
                Age at Death:36
                District:Steyning
                County:Sussex
                Volume:2b
                Page. 205

I do realise that his name wasn't Francis, but whoever registered the death would not have known that. (there is the chance that it ISN'T him also)
