  • Searching for a mining accident... how do I?

My brother in law believes that his grandfather was killed in a mining accident.

His name was William Henry. He was born in Durham in 1878.

He was from a mining family although I have him on the 1901 and 1911 census as a barman. I suppose he could still have gone into the pits.

I can't find a death on FreeBMD but realise I may have to trawl the indexes.

I wondered if anyone with newspaper archives access could find anything about mining accidents in Durham.

His father was also William Henry, he was a miner born in 1843 although the 1911 census says he is an ex miner. I think I have found his death in 1915 in Durham.

Had a quick look at that Julie

Did a search on the mining disasters site. No William Henry's.

Trouble is with a surmane like Henry, it keeps being assumed it's a first name.

**no point asking the living for help as the dead are more helpful!!!**

The William Henry listed on that Durham Memorial Roll is probably the one whose death was registered Jun 1918 Castle Ward district, as that was the district for Wallbottle. His age is 37 on the death registration so doesn't quite match the info you have, Margaret, but not wildly out either.

              Hi Julie and Amy

              I don't think that's him.

He was still alive in 1921 as that's when brother in laws dad was born.

I'll have to do a bit more investigating I think.

I only started this side of his tree last night, early days.

                Hi Kate

See my post above, we cross posted.

He was still alive to father a child born 1921.

Trouble is brother in laws dad died a couple of years ago. Perhaps his mum knows something. I'll get him to ask her a few questions.

The Black Sheep index also has an index of mining accidents:
