If someone was to send me a Word document via a memory stick created on an XP machine can i open it in Open Office (via Vista) at all?

After much deliberating i'm going to ask my new found rellie to send the life story of our granny to me, he says there is so much he would need to add it to a memory stick and it's in Word format.
