  • Steamships

Hi I am Jane Hennebry (nee Penligen). My Gt Gt grandfather was William Henry Penligen (b1849, Dartmouth) Master Mariner. I am keen to research the ships he sailed on (steamships), mostly from Hull to the Baltic.
His father was also a sea captain, he was John Penligen (Devon). Are such shipping lists available on line? I have the name of some of the vessels and dates. Grateful for any help. Jane

In case you haven't found them yet, these wiki pages are useful for maritime links:

Records of Merchant Seamen - Family Tree Forum

    and

Maritime - Family Tree Forum which includes links to the Lloyds Register of Ships and also to the Lloyds Captains Register.

Newspapers are a good source for sailing departures and arrivals - and the occasional sinking! See the Wiki for advice on newspapers resources.

Definitely worth looking in that Lloyds Captains Register if you haven't already, because there is an entry for William Henry Penligen (and it says see also Pentigen) and you can get the references from there, then go to the Guildhall Library and look at the documents.

And Guildhall Library will do a limited number of free look-ups for names that they haven't already put online.
