  • census help please

i've just found a marriage for ellen smith to john a. kelsall/astle in bowden st mary in trafford, cheshire in 1853.

ellen was born in 1826, preston, lancashire, to william smith and elizabeth sophia twyford.

i can't find her in 1841, but 1851 she is with her mother elizabeth and stepfather, john lindley in altrincham, cheshire.

can anyone please find her in the census from 1861? or maybe a death reg?
she doesn't seem to have died in altrincham.

thankyou for that, she definently mine, her kids were registered as john lindley and elizabeth sophia lindley kelsall.

there was rumour among the family that she died in 1868, but i havn't been able to find that definently. can you find the family in 1871? no probs if you can't.

      thankyou.

Back again Kyle, we have a storm hovering so may have to go offline in a sec.

1871 census shows John A Kelsall is now a widower aged 53 living at Bank Street still in Altrincham - a Brewer & wine merchant (I think it says)
Son John Kelsall is a pupil and scholar at a school in North Meols Lancashire
I haven't found daughter Elizabeth as yet.

            back again
            1861 census RG9/2589 folio 121 page 48
            1871 census John A Kelsall RG10/3683 folio 36 page 19
1871 census John L Kelsall RG10/3873 folio 153 page 29 (sorry I couldn't find out the name of the school - but it was in Queens road and there was All Saints church in the same road. It had a lot of pupils, so was a large school)

Not too much luck with deaths for Ellen
            1861 Q3 Elizabeth Kelsall Altrincham 8a 121
1862 Q4 Ellen Kelsall Ashton 8d 31 (not sure where this is in relation to Altrincham)
            1863 Q2 Elizabeth Kelsall Ashton 8d 287

            Hope this helps -

Cheshire BMD has an Ellen Kelsall death aged 42 in 1868 Altrincham

              Cheshire Births Marriages & Deaths

Free BMD has it transcribed as Ellan Kelsall but the image is quite poor

thanx for the ref, that's very helpful. um, apparently ashton is ashton under lyne, and is 27 mins away.

yeah, i havn't had much luck with ellen's death either. i would think because her husband was in altrincham in 1871, that she would have died there too.

All sorted Kyle? it looks as though young Elizabeth may have died too just after the 1861 census

You're welcome Kyle. Don't forget to check the Cheshire wills database. There are several Kelsall's on there

it turns out elizabeth sophia lindley kelsall didn't die young:

                              Marriages Jun 1884
BURGESS, William James Ormskirk 8b 1123
Hethorn, Richard Lawrence Ormskirk 8b 1123
                              Kelsall, Elizabeth Sophia L Ormskirk 8b 1123
                              Nixon Elizabeth Ormskirk 8b 1123

                              here's her death:

                              Deaths Mar 1904
                              Hethorn Elizabeth S L 49 Ulverston 8e 620

so she must be around in the census?
