  • where is my gt granny hiding?

Hi all, hope someone can help, I'm stumped. We all thought our gt grandma was Maria Fowkes but having recently got her marriage cert I find she was a widow, and her father is stated as John Austin. However I cant find Maria and her previous spouse living anywhere. I have a Maria Austin and William Fowkes marrying in 1862 (I think this might be the correct couple) and a girl being christened in Darlaston in 1863 called Agnes parents William and Maria Fowkes. William dies in 1875. Maria married my gt grandad in 1876. She died abt 1882 in Scunthorpe Lincs and my gt grandad remarried.

Question is where were they between their marriage in 1862 and his death in 1875 and where is Agnes & are there any more children?

    John Ruscoe b1855 Darlaston Staffs
    Maria Fowkes/Austin c1841 Darlaston Staffs
    married 1876 Wednesbury Staffs
Maria Austin/William Fowkes married Dec Q 1862 West Bromwich
Agnes Fowkes christened 5 July 1863

Can't be them as I've found them in 1881.

        Another wrong lead

Sorry not getting much joy at all.

Have you got Maria on any census at all?

Got to go out now - probably won't be back on until the morning.

Hi JBee, mmm not what I wanted to hear! I have maria in the 1881 census following the marriage to my gt grandfather but not before. Tis a problem. Back to the drawingboard.

Still not much joy finding Maria in the census's.

            Looked up the 1881 census RG11 3287 73 46 which you've already found.

with Mariah bc1841 Darlaston, Staffs and new husband John ROSCOW in Scunthorpe. He's a lot younger than her.

Also their marriage - John RUSCORN to Maria Fowkes in Sept qtr 1876 at West Bromwich 6b 899

The only marriage I've found for a Fowkes/Austin is
Alice Austin to John Fowkes in June qtr 1860 - West Bromwich 6b 814

            .................................................. ....

As Maria said she was born c1841

Have found a Maria Austin born Dec qtr 1841 at West Bromwich 18 534

            .................................................. ......

1851 Census - Could this be Maria and family? born Wednesbury not Darlaston- Surname Auston

            HO107; Piece: 2022; Folio: 255; Page: 32; GSU roll: 87427.

If it is the father John comes from a big family of Austin/Austins in Lilleshall, Shropshire according to the IGI

              RG9; Piece: 2034; Folio: 26; Page: 18; GSU roll: 542906

Maria 18's and place of birth has changed from Wednesbury to Kings Hall, Staffs.
Younger brother 15 John's place of birth has changed from Darlaston to Kings Hall, Staffs too.
              Youngest brother Edward is Darlaston.

JBee! youve been a busy bee and given me lots to look at and think through. Today will be very busy as I leave Oz to visit my brandnew grandson in Lincolnshire tomorrow morning. All this will give me plenty to chew over on the long journey. Thanks a million, will let you know the outcome eventually, maybe have to be when I get back here in June, dont know if I will be able access my stuff while over there.

Sorry I haven't been able to give you anything concrete about Maria's whereabouts - hopefully you can get to prove things eventually.

Hope you have a great trip to UK and enjoy your time with your new grandson and family,
